ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores human identity.

Humans are profound creatures capable of great compassion and yet, such horror and ruin. In the meanwhile, we preoccupy ourselves whether we are aware of it or not, with the trivial task of presenting our egos visually. That task is a work of cultural nuance and whole industries are built around our desire to communicate in that way. Even those who believe they have escaped the nonsense of such a dance are still without awareness or consent, playing their part.

My background is in fashion, I worked globally in the fashion market for 27 years, vapid, and shallow as it is, I did have a lot of time to ruminate on just how deep this topic ran. I am fascinated with humans and equally fascinated with the boundary where spiritually - the pursuit to release the “ego” and the need to “be” coincide.

I have been unintentionally studying this topic since I was a kid, curios about the different ways I was treated and seen, me being a young rebellious skateboarder who was also a private school kid. It’s a topic that has seemed keep follow me into adulthood.

Rooted in photography and collage, images are taken, found and reworked to depict our preconceived notions, our communication, and our self-expression. Typically medium to large scale, I use watered down acrylic, pencil, charcoal, and mix media.

I’d like the viewer to come away thinking about world we live in through the lends of their identity, how they communicate it, and what it’s limitations and restrictions are.
