Punk #2, 2025

Raised in the 80’s and 90’s punk and even pop culture played with gender. It was wild and risque if a man dared to push against the traditional male stereotype- with long hair-sprayed hair, and makeup, post punk, new wave, and even metal bands were experimenting with it. Are you man enough? Were you man enough? I find it wild and punk to play with gender in my work even now as the idea is more broadly accepted in western culture. It takes a certain confidence in self to allow your heterosexuality to be challenged in the public eye. This collection is called, ‘Becoming’ a study into identity. How does the viewer feel looking at this masculine male figure with a strong confident pose, and his borrowed female eye’s and lips? The answer will change as pop culture shifts, people grow, or from which origin culture you come from.

Hard lines. Soft features. A sailor masculine, scribbled in pencil, wearing someone else’s eyes and lips borrowed from a a girl in a fashion magazine. This one’s about control and identity and in the human experience.

Part of my, Elegance of Dissonance collection.
